Tens of thousands of patients were waiting for routine treatment at St Helens and Knowsley Hospitals Trust in December, figures show.

The figures come as new research suggests waiting lists across England are unlikely to shrink this year.

NHS England figures show 44,851 patients were waiting for non-urgent elective operations or treatment at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust at the end of December – down from 45,373 in November, but an increase on 29,625 in December 2021.

Of those, 2,515 (6%) had been waiting for longer than a year.

The median waiting time from referral at an NHS Trust to treatment at St Helens and Knowsley Hospitals Trust was 13 weeks at the end of December – up from 11 weeks in November.

Nationally, 7 million people were waiting to start treatment at the end of December.
